City of York Council

The York Economic Strategy, covering the period 2011-2015, has been finalised.

This document, published jointly by City of York Council and York Economic Partnership, recognises the difficulties recession has placed upon both households and firms in the city and recognises the need to develop a robust strategy for recovery and development.

We have much to be justly proud of in York, assets that are first class and present many opportunities; our heritage and culture, leading universities, a strong science and innovation focus, highly-skilled workforce and strengths in both old and new industries.

However, the full potential of the city's economy has not yet been realised, and difficult economic times could present challenges to York's economy in the near future. We need to develop a more productive and enterprising economy that makes the most of the assets we have whilst improving upon our weaknesses. With improvements to our economy, we can work to improve our international profile and attract higher levels of inward investment.

Our central economic vision is for the City of York to become a more enterprising and international city economy, renowned for opportunity and specifically to become a top-10 English city economy that delivers for business, people and the environment, and internationally-recognised as an 'innovation capital' - a key centre for science, R&D and knowledge-based business.
